The inability to cope with the external forces is why this happened. It's like saying my nephew hung himself because of his girlfriend. Or other shootings happened because of bullying, or a breakup, or whatever.
Many people go through what he did and don't open fire on people.
Other people go through LESS, and do. A pacifist, with the inability to cope, and the other triggers in place, could possibly do the same thing.
The external forces are not to blame, and it's really awful that you are using the blood of others to make this sort of point. This man's mental issues pulled the trigger.
Too often, your posts come off to me as void of compassion and filled with bile and an unwillingness to care about others that share your very specific world view. I just really cannot subject myself to someone who is all hat and no cowboy, using situations to make themselves sound more 'enlightened'.
This is the last. What good is pacifism if you have such malice and hate in your words?
and I do mean this sincerely, good luck. you're doing your best with a hard situation and I'm sorry you're stressed. I don't think I was either inaccurate or inappropriate in what I said, however. basic training is designed to break people psychologically and make them emotionally dependent on the command structure. that's distinctly different from normal outside pressures that lead people to have violent breakdowns.
the military recruits heavily from people more likely to have mental issues in the first place, (the poor, disadvantaged - they took my brother's best friend without a high school diploma, barely of out rehab. instead of finishing up English he got explosives training.) he was particularly excited to talk about how their levels of substance abuse (20% alcoholism according to the DoD's own statistics) were drastically higher than the general populations. I doubt I need to tell you chances of mental health problems and homelessness are similarly through the roof.
yes, they're victims. they're usually doing what they believe is right, they're also occasionally shooting vans full of women and children at checkpoints or electrocuting people lying naked on the floor. 41% of female veterans report having been sexually assaulted, the rates of rape and violent crime nearby US military bases are likewise absurdly high. considering the men involved have been deliberately twisted to make them more effective killing machines, this is somewhat understandable, if still disgusting and disturbing.
I'm not using the blood of others to make any point, nor am I saying anything my close friend didn't after her brother died because the military had turned him from a happy normal teenager into a suicidal burning wreck with everything he needed to shoot his own head off. I'm sick of hearing about one more broken soul loosing it because the general public would rather idolize state sponsored murder and pretend the men whose most inhuman tendencies are cultivated are superhuman instead of broken. the only thing the military does is take boys, chew them up, and spit out their broken minds and bodies, and leave the corpses of a few foreigners and lots of profit behind in the process.
and yes, I have malice towards an institution that lets 85% of convicted rapists go with honorable discharges. yes, I hate an institution that creates serious mental health problems in 30% of veterans within 4 months of coming home. yes, I get angry when I think about 100k documented civilian deaths in iraq, some estimates going as high as 600k. yes, I think people who sign up for this are either brainwashed or monsters.
